Background and objective: natural skin cleansing soap was become popular again in the society. Soap can made by the reaction between an oil and fat with strong alkali. Virgin coconut oil contains many of saturated fatty acids and conversely sunflower oil contains many of unsaturated fatty acids. The difference in saturated condition between that oil will yield a different characteristic of the soap formulas. The aims of this study was to develop the liquid soap formulas containing virgin coconut oil and sunflower oil with various composition which have a good cleansing ability and not cause skin dry and irritation. Method: Liquid soap formulas were made with the composition of virgin coconut and sunflower oil of 70:30 (A), 60:40 (B) and 50:50 (C), potassium hydroxide as strong alkali and water. Liquid soap was made by reacting oils and KOH at 80-90° C. The soap characteristics were evaluated for density, viscosity, surface tension reduction and height of foam. And then foamability, cleansing property, irritativeness and dry skin feeling were tests using 8 subjects. The results were also compared to the reference liquid soap from the market (D). Results: The formula A has a highest density and viscosity followed by formula B and C respectively. There is no significant difference on the surface tension reduction for all formulas. Formula A yields highest foam in the distilled water, whereas formula D yields highest foam in hard water. The result from the subjects showed that formula A has a significant difference in irritativeness and dry skin feeling test with other formulas. There are no significant difference in foamability and cleansing property between all formulas. Conclusion: The formula B and C show a good cleansing ability and not cause skin dry and irritation.
